TIPS ON HOW TO DEAL WITH A DIFFICULT BOSS

If you are working for a manager or boss who is often annoyed and limits even your personal life to work then as the time pass the current situation will become more and more complicated that will only result to the loss for employee and not the manager, either the employee will lose his job or will resign voluntarily. But you can handle this easily by following these steps ;

COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY

The very first reason between a manager and employee conflict is the gap in communication, and due to this, the situation becomes more and more conflicting.
The manager and employee might be two different personalities with a different set of beliefs and perceptions, but there is always one thing in common which is self-respect.

A manager always strive for the pride of his position from his subordinates and on the other hand since an employee is a subordinate he never wants to be any less than his/her manager therefore there comes a situation in which one needs to compromise and here mostly the employee who needs to follow the command of the manager.

Suppose you require leaves for a vacation with your family and you asked for the leaves from your manager but if he rejects your application by word of mouth mention some weird reason of resource crunch, workload etc. If you came to work under his command then there might be no issue for that particular time but if you took leaves against him them then surely your manager will take strict actions against you and escalate it to the high-level management team.

So it's better to keep updating your manager in advance verbally as well as email so that it is documented as a proof of your communication. Communication is a two-way process so you should be a patient listener too, this one thing will help you to resolve most of the issues in your corporate journey.

DON'T ACT AGGRESSIVE

If you want to know how to deal with a difficult boss then you need to understand that there are times when a meeting with your boss or manager could turn into an argument, this could be due to several uncountable reasons like justification for the task, issues with the colleagues, or injustice behaviour of manager even though you perform your work very well. When caught in a conflicting situation with your manager you should always give due time for things to settle down.

No matter how much argument you had with your boss in a meeting room but you should try to avoid the aggressive behaviour when you come out of that zone, and try to act as nothing happened amongst your colleague so that even your manager should not feel that you are insulting him amongst your colleagues because you might tell it to your dearest corporate friend but it will definitely reach as a word of mouth to your manager from behind that will lead to more misunderstandings in future.

Aggressive behaviour towards your colleagues, manager or any other staff could lead to behaviour escalations and people will not like to work with them, and soon this could turn out into a reason for being fired from a job. It makes sense to wait for a little before confronting the situation head-on.

BE PREPARED IN ADVANCE!

I hope that you are honest, hard worker, disciplined, consistent and devote yourself to work but if you want to grow in the organisation and reach the top then being nice will not help you in any way! But when you will realise it would be too late because by that time other people will grow above you. Suppose once in a while you had an experience with your manager where he let you down maybe in front of your colleagues or other managers and now you know that you could not trust him/her for your future decisions.

You will be going to interact with many people in the organisation where you will experience people with dual face, one for you and other for your manager, and since your manager is not your friend that you could trust then you need to make sure that you also play a nice and peaceful game not letting you to suffer for the karmas of someone else.

We recommend you to keep an eye on the activities of your manager toward you and observe the way he portrays himself in front of you verbally is he putting the same response in the documents, like email communication.

Here we recommend you to read “5 Things to Consider when writing an email"

If you have a sense of doubt then make sure you document your meetings and interactions with your manager, keeping track of all the commitments and orders on the email, kindly avoid the telephonic and other communication platforms like WhatsApp, but in case you are required to do so then kindly record them and keep with you safe without letting others know about it so that you can refer back and also use them as proof’s when he/she contradicts themselves.

WORK MUST GO ON

If you really know how to deal with a difficult boss then you first need to make yourself clear that what a manager needs at priority is work. The only way your manager could be stronger than you are when he finds a gap in your work and the prespecified targets to be achieved in an everyday process, If he finds in records that your performance is less than expected then no matter how many excuses you give the end result would be you have not performed your task as required. You need to understand that whatever the situation is and no matter how evil your manager is, it should not affect your performance at work. If it does then you need to take necessary steps so that your manager could not be dominant over you. Otherwise Quitting the job is the last choice.

But that doesn’t really mean that the whole life turns into an end and you need to suffer from unemployment, Yes its true that it takes some time to settle down in life but this is the right time for you to look for opportunities that best fit for you and you don’t require to sacrifice your life that’s why we recommend you to have a look at “Top 10 Emerging Careers in India for Modern Youth.”

ALWAYS STAY ONE STEP AHEAD OF YOUR BOSS

When you have a manager or boss who is always complaining about deadlines and likes to micromanage things then it is advisable to be one step ahead and not giving him a chance to complain. Try to stay as disciplined as possible, be honest with your job duties and most important is to maintain your break duration during this phase.

IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSE

Usually, we categorise our managers within two categories either good or evil but if you are confused between whether your manager is good or evil because sometimes he/she acts very good with you and sometimes very bad and to figure out his true character you need to identify the root cause for your manager’s unusual behaviour. If it is all about anger management then you need to observe what triggers your boss breakdowns. It will help you avoid such situations and be at a safe level while dealing with him/her.

See where you stand with your manager, ask these questions with yourself - What makes the boss unhappy, what are his difficult areas, is he like this with everybody or just with you and are you comfortable with rest of leadership team except your boss? - If you realise all the points as mentioned above then you now know clearly all the best tricks on dealing with a difficult boss.
